Archaeologists found valuable finds near Karabau village

According to the annual plan, from August 21 to September 29 employees of the Atyrau regional local history museum completed excavations of the Karakudyk-1 and Karadukyk-2 mounds in Kyzylkoga district and valuable finds were discovered.

The groups of mounds “Karakudyk-1”, “Karakudyk-2”, dating back to the early Iron Age (V-IV centuries BC) are located 9.7 km northwest of the village of Karabau in Kyzylkoga district of Atyrau region. The mound “Karakudyk 1” has a diameter of 38 m and a height of 1.8 m. The mound “Karakudyk 2” has a diameter of 37 m and a height of 1.4 m. The mounds are covered with sandy soil, and the tops of the burials are covered with wood and cattails. Based on the results of excavations, approximately10 burials were identified in the mounds. The peculiarity is that spare parts of the mound were not looted. The central (main) graves of the cemeteries were completely looted and only in two unlooted graves of mound No. 1 was found a part of a wooden vessel with a silver pictogram (with images of a saiga, a wolf), as well as gold jewelry, ceramic dishes and other various household items. In three burial grounds of mound No. 2 was discovered the body of a male warrior as well as golden horse harness, ceramic dishes, fragments of a bronze cauldron, iron and bronze weapons (dagger, sword, arrowheads, parts of spears). In addition, three bronze cauldrons were discovered in other cemeteries. Based on archaeological research have been identified artifacts of the early Sarmatian era, the Prokhorov era, which is typical for the V-IV centuries BC.
