Presentation of the Book “Toponyms of Kurmangazy District” Held

Today, October 21, the Atyrau Regional Museum of History and Local Lore hosted the presentation of a historical toponymy research book entitled “Toponyms of Kurmangazy District”. The event was part of a cultural and educational programme organized in celebration of Republic Day.

The research publication was prepared by the regional museum with the support of the Atyrau Region Department of Culture and Languages Development. The book explores the origins of geographical names in Kurmangazy District, as well as their historical, cultural, and linguistic characteristics.

Historical documents, archival records, cartographic materials, and information gathered during field expeditions were used in preparing the book. The publication aims to support the academic study of the region’s toponymic heritage, reveal the meanings of historical place names, and pass national values on to future generations.

The event was opened by Abil Tauifikuly Zholamanov, Head of the Atyrau Region Department of Culture and Language Development. During the event, the book’s authors and compilers spoke about the research process and the contents of the publication. Mukhambetkali Kuanyshkaliuly Kipiev, Head of the Museum, also highlighted the importance of studying, preserving, and promoting historical heritage.

The event concluded with the ceremonial launch of the book. The ribbon was cut by Zhanabay Tolegenuly Zhanabay, a local historian, member of the Writers’ Union of Kazakhstan, and honorary journalist of Kazakhstan, and Amangeldi Shamgonuly Shamgonov, a historian and local history researcher.

This new publication is a scholarly contribution to a deeper understanding of the region’s history, the revival of historical memory preserved in geographical names, and the promotion of the spiritual heritage of the local region.
