National Art that Began with the Spindle
On March 17, as part of the Nauryznama festive decade and in honor of Shanyrak Day, the Atyrau Regional Museum of History and Local Lore held the opening ceremony of the exhibition “The Art that Began with the Spindle.”
The exhibition aims to promote the history of traditional Kazakh handicrafts related to wool processing, yarn spinning, and weaving, as well as to introduce the public to the national cultural heritage.
At the opening ceremony, Deputy Director of the Atyrau Regional Museum of History and Local Lore Aigul Tileshkyzy delivered a welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of national decorative and applied arts in cultural heritage.
The event was attended by Saltanat Yeleusinova, member of the International Crafts Council and the Eurasian Designers Union, and head of the Republican Public Association “Urshyk,” along with association members Gulzira Khairullina Kubashkyzy and Meruert Epkinqyzy. Teachers and students of the K. Dutbayeva Atyrau Humanitarian College and museum staff also participated in the event.
During the event, Saltanat Zulkaydarkyzy, on behalf of the “Urshyk” Public Association, donated a special handicraft item to the museum collection, contributing to the preservation of national craft heritage.
The exhibition featured wool-processing tools, various spindle types dating from the 19th–20th centuries, yarn-spinning items, as well as carpets, baskurs, weaving pieces, korzhyn bags, zhelbau decorations, lacework, and embroidery samples.
The exhibition tour was conducted by guide Aiym Zhanabil, who provided visitors with detailed information about the history and features of the exhibits.
At the end of the event, masters from the Republican Public Association “Urshyk” held a master class on spinning yarn with a spindle, introducing guests to the intricacies of traditional craftsmanship.
The exhibition “The Art that Began with the Spindle” is aimed at promoting national handicrafts and preserving the cultural heritage passed down from ancestors to the younger generation.
